M Tech Computer Science

Department of Computer Science, University of Kerala has engraved a strong post graduate culture in computer studies. It provides four streams in Master level programmes: M. Tech Computer Science with specialization in Digital Image Computing, M.Sc. Computer Science, M.Sc. Computer Science with specialization in AI, and M.Sc. Computer Science with specialization in ML. The department offers research-oriented programmes, guided by renowned faculty, ina conducive environment for learning, thinking and achieving program specific goals.

The M. Tech programme was introduced in the year 2000. This is a two-year postgraduate program designed to equip students with cutting-edge knowledge, research capabilities, and industry-relevant skills in Computer Vision and Artificial Intelligence. The world is witnessing rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML), leading to innovations in Image Processing and Natural Language Processing (NLP).This specialization focuses on equipping students with the skills to develop various AI based computer vision architectures. The curriculum typically covers methodologies such as convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for image feature extraction and transformer models for language processing, providing a strong foundation for tackling complex visual and textual data challenges. This programme blends theory and practical applications to provide students with expertise in handling images, videos, text data through AI and ML techniques. The curriculum is structured to prepare students for careers in research, Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning.


Programme Specific Outcomes:
i. Develop the ability to pragmatically apply mathematical and computing skills to solve image processing problems.
ii. Inculcate advanced technical skills in Image Processing and Machine Learning models that enable students to perform better through their critical and analytical skills.
iii. Develop an ability to design, develop and implement advanced algorithms on different image processing applications and solve real-world problems using Artificial Intelligence based methods.
iv. Acquire the flair of research by enriching students to undertake research oriented projects and develop the skillset to work in R&D institutions.
v. Possess insight and good understanding of the selected topics in analyzing, compressing and processing of images and videos.
vi. Create competence to specialize in Image Processing, Signal Processing and Computation models, including Machine Learning and Deep learning.
vii. Develop the research skills for writing technical and scientific publications and enable them to understand publication ethics.
viii. Demonstrates the capability of doing a dissertation in advanced image processing by exploiting cutting-edge technologies.
ix. Develop specialized skills in computer vision, speech-based applications that use image analysis, speech recognition and natural language processing
x. Possess the competence to process medical images, analyse cyber crimes and security issues to find solutions and acquire a sense of social commitment.
xi. Develop skillset for leading a pathway towards pursuing doctoral programme by acquiring the expertise in image processing domain.
xii. Promote and develop the skill set to apply data science and machine learning techniques to solve interdisciplinary problems.

The M.Tech programme is AICTE approved and affiliated to University of Kerala. The programme comprises theory and practical courses, case studies, industry internship and dissertation work. The programme runs under the Credit and Semester System (CSS). The programme shall be offered with different courses, each with an assigned credit.Candidates are admitted through valid GATE score or University entrance examination. GATE qualified students will be given preference for admission.

Duration : 2 Years (4 Semesters)

Eligibility/Qualification :

A Bachelors degree in Engineering / Technology (B.Tech/ B.E) with at least 55% marks in one of the following branches: Computer Science and Engineering / Information Technology/ Electronics Engineering / Electrical Engineering/ Electrical & Computer Engineering/ Electronics and Computer Engineering/ Computer Science and Engineering and Business Systems/ Cyber Physical Systems/ Computer Science & Design/ Robotics and Artificial Intelligence/ Internet of Things from the University of Kerala or equivalent recognized degree of a recognized University or First Class Masters degree, M.Sc. in Computer Science / Artificial Intelligence/ Data Science/ Machine Learning/ Masters in Computer Application (MCA) from the University of Kerala/ M.Voc Software Development or equivalent recognized degree of a recognized University. Preference will be given to candidates who have qualified GATE.
Eligibility for admissions to sponsored seats will be governed by the following AICTE guidelines. The candidates should have:
i.A Bachelors degree in Engineering / Technology (B.Tech/ B.E) with at least 55% marks in one of the following branches: Computer Science and Engineering / Information Technology/ Electronics Engineering / Electrical Engineering/ Electrical & Computer Engineering/ Electronics and Computer Engineering/ Computer Science and Engineering and Business Systems/ Cyber Physical Systems/ Computer Science & Design/ Robotics and Artificial Intelligence/ Internet of Things from the University of Kerala or equivalent recognized degree of a recognized University. Preference will be given to candidates who have qualified GATE.
ii.A minimum two years of full time work experience in Category I an Educational Institution / Research institution / any Government Department /Government Autonomous Organization.
OR Category II - a registered firm / Company / Industry in the relevant field with CMM level 5 /CMMI / ISO certification.
iii. Less than 45 years of age as on 1st day of the year of admission.

Admission Procedure:

The rank list for admission shall be prepared based on the performance in the Entrance Examination or valid GATE score. For sponsored candidates, ranking shall be based on 80% weightage for CGPA/aggregate marks at the bachelor level, 10% for work experience (1% per year), and 10% for an interview conducted by the Department Council.
